What the boxes do to your image
Blur cuts the area under a box into a coarse grid, replaces each cell with the average color of what it covered, and smooths the result. Solid fill paints the area black. Either way the original pixels are replaced in the saved image, not hidden behind a layer, so sharpening or zooming in can't bring the text back.
When you download or copy, the redaction is applied to the image at its original size. The PNG is drawn fresh from the pixels, so metadata in the original file, such as camera or location details, isn't carried over. Undo history isn't saved either.
A box only covers what you drew it over. Look through the saved image before you post it, in case the same detail shows up somewhere else in the picture.

Blur private areas while you share
In Curtains, box out an email address or a whole window during a call. Regions are shrunk and blurred, so text can't be recovered.
